Of interest to me is the way in which many scholars now believe that the term "Urim and Thummim" is synonymous with a single seer stone. In other words, when they say Joseph used the "Urim and Thummim" for the lost 116 pages, it means he used a stone he called "Urim and Thummim" for that process before switching to the Cadbury swirl egg for the rest.

Ok, I would agree that there is no doubt that Hoaks is the most purely evil member of the quorum, maybe one of the most evil people in Utah (and that's saying a lot). But for some reason I just hate hearing from that little fucker Bednar (sorry, but it's a fact). The sound of his voice is like fingers on a chalkboard.

Wow this is very close to home to me. My daughter is expressing an intention to go on a mission in six months. I can't stand the idea. She sees all the rich Pinterest Mormon girls going on missions and talking them up and is adamant that she wants to go so badly. It makes my flesh crawl. My wife loves the idea of her going. I told my daughter I need to have a difficult talk with her before she

Amen and amen. Mark Twain nailed it in 1872: "...an insipid mess of inspiration...The Mormon Bible is rather stupid and tiresome to read, but there is nothing vicious in its teachings. Its code of morals is unobjectionable — it is “smouched” from the New Testament and no credit given." I love how apologists think it is "too complex" and "too far beyon

I have thought about the peace corps for her since she has already gone on a few humanitarian trips. I think she sees a mission as a service opportunity to help people. It does help people, just not the ones she thinks it does. I have heard that the book Heaven Up Here actually motivates people to want to go on a mission more. Is that not true?

Thank you all for the suggestions and motivation. I have to admit I am feeling a little fatalistic, but I'm not sure why. When she told me she wanted to go, I asked her exactly why, and she told me some personal reasons, none of which were very strong in my opinion. But something tells me that I will absolutely lose her trust if I take the blazing six-guns approach. She already knows h

I'm pretty discouraged. She's a very independent, smart, go-getter type. She has been raised by TBM mom and very un-TBM me. I made sure she never felt pressured into belief or conformity. She has never "born her testimony", doesn't pay attention in church usually, and is very outspoken for LGBT rights. Her older brother did not go on a mission. She wants to turn in "her

Henry, are you suggesting that there is a qualitative difference in the cognitive impressions that your purported ITD identifies as true vs. those it identifies as false? Or is the difference between true and false "quantitative" (for lack of a better term), ie. merely in the force with which the impression strikes us?

"Tender mercies of the Lord" The fact that Bednar can say that phrase without feeling like a total tool proves that he is a total tool at his baseline level.

I don't want to belabor my point from earlier, but this article is one of the things I was referring to. Chronic opiates make people feel more pain from noxious stimuli, make non-noxious stimuli seem painful, cause depression, seeking behavior, deconditioning, personality changes. In essence, life itself becomes too painful without the drug. I have seen too many patient's lives changed dram

Be careful. If you get into an accident, even if the narcotic is not the cause, it will be a serious problem for you. Also, I would try to find other sources of pain control (along the lines of Neurontin, baclofen, and NSAIDs). Opiates are an uphill fight and pretty soon you need the Vicodin just to control the pain of not having the Vicodin.

Earthshattering stuff. It's really too bad that no conquered and vanquished people, no victims of genocide, no civilizations wiped out through famine and disease ever thought to pray to God. They would have been just fine.

I love watching the way these LDS weasels work. From this article on the "reaffirmation of discrimination" statement to be read in LDS wards we find this telling paragraph: "Indeed, the church has advocated for rights of same-sex couples in matters of hospitalization and medical care, fair housing and employment, and probate, so long as these do not infringe on the integri

I think the answer has already been given. Oaks and co. knew they had lost the marriage equality fight. They surrendered at their press conference, and in the same voice pretended they were victims of religious discrimination. This is the testimony builder for me: through the foresight of the Lord's anointed, there wasn't a SINGLE SECOND where the faithful were left without a bogeyman to m

Think of what the GAs and missionaries promise people: They will have a witness of the Holy Ghost and they will know that the Book of Mormon is true. I would say something sort of like this happens to 1 in 1000 who try it. They will feel a great burden lifted from them in the waters of baptism, and then again and again every Sunday when they take the sacrament. This seems to NEVER be true

Dallin Oaks, the man apparently totally in charge of the LDS church at this point, spoke at the "Boise Rescue" about "fruits" being a great way to see which beliefs were true. Well, the Mormon church is founded on claims of a restoration of power and authority. Its scriptures tell us that with faith you can have the power to move a mountain, raise someone from the dead, de

So when you say that the codependents who follow deserve no quarter or deference, would you apply that to the families that "gave" their daughters to JS and BY as plural wives? Because sometimes I feel that way, but then they truly seemed like victims with no other options at other times.

I think you are right about that point number 1. To be consistent I would have to say that when I am being a sheep and allowing myself to be manipulated to enrich or strengthen someone else, I can't rasie an ethical complaint. So I don't really see that as an objection to the morality of using others per se.

In this paradigm there are three types of people: 1. Those who manipulate, flatter, and use other people for their own enrichment and pleasure. These people often have more wealth and status than any other group. 2. Those who are easily--almost naturally--manipulated, flattered, and used, who seem to be either content being so treated or unaware that they are, and really have no great drive
