My heart goes out to the injured and killed and their loved ones. Senseless tragedy. I read some of the comments on the KSL article and found this one by Garwin: "Prayers and Faith offered in sympathy to these faithful missionaries and their families. I know the Lord will be with them, and because of their injuries, there will be people that will come to the gospel "because" of

I think the worst thing, as many have stated, is the damage Mormonism does to family relationships from so many angles--and that's while being active and not apostates. Everything goes from bad to worse when you take the blinders off. Mormonism took my childhood. I was the live-in babysitter to my five younger sibs while my mother chased MLM pyramid schemes, all in the effort to be a successfu

How will they spin the obvious lack of inspiration in calling these individuals to leadership positions? The kind of wealth seized doesn't happen overnight. This guy was probably dirty when he was "set apart." Of course, the members will blame it on Satan getting his grubby hands on a good man, or, maybe they'll think it's okay to operate the way this guy did and that it's the "

They took your planet away. http://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article/mormonism-101#C14 Scroll down to the question in the FAQ: Do Latter-day Saints believe that they will “get their own planet”? "No. This idea is not taught in Latter-day Saint scripture, nor is it a doctrine of the Church. This misunderstanding stems from speculative comments unreflective of scriptural doctrine.&qu

To the OP, I think the pain and betrayal you're feeling is the reason I didn't even try to look into another religion. I remember thinking: If Mormonism is a scam, then other religions are probably scams too. More than anything, I remember feeling angry at my parents, grandparents, great grandparents and so on for not questioning the church earlier. Oddly enough, my parents are the kind who a

Ah, Mormons in their natural habitat. You described my mom's home perfectly. The only thing I'd add is a cupboard full of bottles and boxes of herbal remedies from all the MLMs she's signed up in over several decades. There's usually some type of literature on the "cocoa" table beside the Ensign describing the new company in full. The company's address is usually Orem or thereabouts.

upThink, I wrote a fantasy/sci-fi book series of which several parts of the plot came about because of my journey out of Mormonism. If these books were adopted into a set of beliefs, we'd have a matriarchal-run religion based on respecting the balance of nature, honoring others' freedom to choose good or bad, and encouraging critical thinking. The lead matriarch encourages questioning ... and not

Horton Hears a Who caused my brain to hurt a little. I never thought a child's story would cause me to think existentially, but it did.

I know a Redbox employee and he says Meet the Mormons isn't slated to be carried by Redbox to his knowledge. (I should note that this employee's region isn't in the Moridor. Perhaps it's different there.) I find this exclusion pretty funny because Redbox carries so many crappy "B" movies, yet Meet the Mormons didn't make the cut. On a related note, the Redbox employee told me when

My husband got into a flame war on FB with a TBM over this topic. The poster's main message was gays "aren't born that way." My husband replied, "Were you born stupid, or do you choose to be that way?" I thought it was funny. The FB poster, not so much.

killmenowqq, I hope you'll come back and give us updates on your struggles and let us in on what's being taught in class and sacrament meeting. If nothing else, this forum can help you survive the next few years under your parents' roof. Hang in there.

My DH says all p.holders know they don't have a special power but figure that "other men" are way more righteous and they DO have the power. When my DH was Elder's Quorum president in the early 90s, the order came down from the top (at least to my recollection) that p.holders should no longer make promises in blessings. No more "you'll be healed" or "you'll live to see yo

Have you done anything special with your extra day off a week and your 10% raise? Eight years ago when we left the church, my DH and I used some of our extra cash to invest in the small-town liquor market. After that “spree” ran its course, we settled down and began supporting the local micro-breweries and wine makers. But, never in eight years did we spend 10% of our monthly income on alc

Great to have you back FCD! Your sense of humor is still intact, I see. I'm wondering how you were able to escape the Celestial Kingdom Cult to return to us mere mortals?

I used to believe and teach that exact thing when I was a member. Since leaving the church, I've found that not only is there happiness outside of tscc, it's a happiness you've never experienced before. I think the phrase is used to scare and control the members into staying. I will say, like so many others on this board, leaving the church is not an easy road but well worth the bumpy journey.

Where exactly on their gay mormon webpage does it say this? I need to give my family member an exact URL (church sponsored) of the church stating gay people are born that way. All I'm finding is glossed over "you're going to hell, but we'll pretend to love you anyway" crap.

In the light blue box at the top of the page, it says: Even though individuals do not choose to have such attractions, they do choose how to respond to them. I was always taught being gay is a choice. Funny how everything changes within the church.

Has the church ever offically stated gays are born that way? I seem to remember something recently, like a new website that showed up, where the church states gays are born that way. Does anyone know the answer to this? If so, can you provide a link? Thanks.

Vote for Pedro: if you send the email, all your wildest dreams will come true!! Sorry, just had to say it. Honestly, imagine the worst case scenerio and then times it by at least ten. You'll be opening floodgates that will cascade much further than you can imagine. If you are all right with this kind of fallout, then go ahead and send the letter. When I was TBM and in the primary presidency, I would joke with the bishop's counselor that I was probably going to be fired for not doing a good enough job. He'd say, "Nah, we keep you till you do, then we put you somewhere else." In the real world, if an employer used the same kind of logic, the business would fail.

Comebacks... Why is it I can leave your church, but your church can't leave me alone? Why does your church teach you to pester the shit out out of me? Are you just trying to get me to react so you can say: You left the church, but you can't leave it alone?

Yeah, this boy's behavior might be chalked up to divorce, but my question is: Where was the divine intervention? Once upon a time, I belived the bishop or Stk Pres could see into my soul. I truly thought, like so many other believing members, the spirit would tell them if I was lying or if I had something to hide. The shooter is portrayed as an active church goer. If that's so, why didn't any
