I think the website was for the most part flying under the radar for most of that time. What would be the political point of exing the guy, that obviously would not stop the website. The fourth estate has jumped all over that angle because it's a boring story otherwise, but I don't really buy the political angle. I think it's a press hyped issue.

No, I am saying that I don't believe the Church would initiate action over political views. Having said that I think it's possible that the Stake President's decision to lash out might have been exacerbated but Twede's political writings, but I doubt in the extreme that it was the impetus. Revealing Temple Ordinances might be passé to those not aware of the personal significance to Mormons,

They list Twede's published view about Romney as if they are on equal footing with revealing temple ordinances to the public. I realize that nevermos would not recognize the disparity in the laundry list, but certainly most of us should. It's sort of like saying, "Man is being prosecuted for murder because he said Star Wars is better than Lord of the Rings, and oh ya ... he also killed a

Whether or not it all started for political reason (you know what I think about that) it most surely has been postponed for political reasons. I don't know what involvement HQ had to do with the initiation of the "disclipline" (obviously that putz from FAIR was involved) but I'm fairly certain the order for Pratt to cool his jets came from the COB.

It wasn't a false issue, just not fleshed out to conclusion. I'm glad we could come to the realization that it is not the goal we disagree about but simply the tactics. I've always been more binary than nuanced.

What is the point of a Mormon "reformation" David. Although I find your methods ineffectual and even a little dishonest; even if you were successful what would be the point? It's perfume on a dead fish. You cannot make a lie truth, you cannot create god where none exists. I think you already know that. If you are interested in feeding the hungry and housing the homeless why d

Peggy is just a slightly edgier version of Carol Mikita, more shill than reporter. Steve I think the reason I bristle at this emerging class of "truth fighters" (Dehlin, Brooks, and now Twede as current examples) is that I take personal issue with this half in half out strategy. I have a distaste for it. It's a pretty black and white issue. Either the LDS Church is God's one t

One of the wonderful advantages of a free mind is to also be free of any appeal to authority. Your say so Steve is interesting, on a couple of levels, but it is not fact nor a source on which I would base my own opinion. I'm not defending the chruch, I just prefer real issues over speculations or even you insistence that you know beyond a shadow of a doubt. And now my friend, I believe it's ti

In all my years dwelling in the very heart of Mordor, in the very core, the very inner workings of the entire beast, I've never once known anyone to be sanctioned in any way for political views. Other than my mother in law at Thanksgiving if that counts. I've never even heard whisperings of such an event. I doubt Harry Reid is dealing with any particular sword of Damocles. That Twede's blog al

I have no agenda, I'm certainly not defending the Mormon Church, I just don't buy that they would move against Twede over political opinions. Sorry

A few years ago I was in a meeting with a man I consider a friend. He also happens to be one of the 12. We were discussing doctrine, my doubts and his certainties. The conversation had been frank but friendly. At one point I mentioned Daniel Peterson and something he'd written for FARMS. For just a moment, just a flash there was a scowl, a glimpse or anger and a glimmer of disgust. In that

If the time frame is as you've suggested, then I believe the timing to be coincidence. The Church is guilty of a lot of things, but I don't believe this is one of them. Threatening church discipline over published views of a political candidate. That's beyond far fetched, but great headlines. There are plenty of real issues to address. No need running off after every shinny new red herring

When we fail to discern truth from lie in the battle for truth, the entire war becomes that much more muddled and our credibility that much less credible.

I think that's what Mr. Twede wanted. Don't you Richard? Linking his "discipline" to criticism of Romney is a lie, but the press ate it up. Although I probably agree with his overall perspective, I don't think truth is ever served by deceit. His tactics are more about attention than they are about any valid concern over his church membership. But if the ends justify the means, w

David, Clearly you've done enough research to understand the fraud. This organization has zero control over you "in this life or in the life to come" if you simply do one thing. Hand them a letter stating you want your named removed from the records of the church, that you want it done immediately, that you understand their perception of the consequences and that you waive any waitin

I know this family. They are great people and active in giving to the community. (and I don't just mean at Church) I'm a fairly jaded person but I have to say I am absolutely shocked and heart sick to hear this news. I've known Tim Bothell and his family through community involvement and I've always had the highest regard for him. My heart goes out to all his victims, including his own family

It's always amazed me how many people really liked that colored shirt story. Had it not been for the backlash of the Sept 6, Brooks and Dehlin would have been exed a long time ago. Both of them. In a way they can thank Boyd they still have an audience.

Jeff Holland doesn't spend even a second of time entertaining the notion that it might not all be true. He honestly remains intentionally ignorant of the controversies and sees absolutely no value in studying anything he knows beyond a shadow of doubt to be an untrue waste of time. Jeff Holland is 100% sincerely and absolutely sure the Church and everything about it is 100% true. His testiness

In my experience it's based on the personality and attitude of the mission president. First keep in mind that no mission president can send a missionary home. That decision is ultimately made by the Area Presidency and must be ratified by the missionary department. The area presidencies (usually 1st quorum types) are more removed from the individual missionaries, less benevolent and tend to be

Ya he did seem to be stumbling around the truth in that interview didn't he. In fact, I noticed that every Mormon they spoke with (Holland, Purdy and the Black Woman Mayor of Herriman) all either flat out lied or created red herrings. The interviewer pointed out Purdy's lie to his face. As the bright light of the national and international media focuses on Mormonism, they aren't going to be

Hi DS - I get your point. I honestly wonder at times if they are a bigger threat to Mormonism than all of us combined. But do they also create a space for people to remain? I wonder if the analogy is a surgeon removing cancer is appropriate. Treatment seems pretty straight forward. Remove as much cancer as you can surgically and then kill the rest with chemo. Does this space created on the
