Then watch out for chiggers. Honestly. They itch like hell. The cure, back in the day, was to paint fingernail polish over the bumps where they had dug in. Naturally, all we could find was red... My rear looked like it had been used as a target for a bb gun....

E. Gordon Gee, President of West Virginia University and formerly president of Brown, Vanderbilt, and Ohio State Universities (where he resigned after making disparaging remarks about catholics and polish folks), made the following statement after the state of West Virginia lifted its ban on gay marriage earlier this week: “I would like to congratulate Gov. Tomblin on his bold and declarativ

When I went to the temple for the first time, I had a terrible panic attack while sitting thru the endowment session. This was in the Washington DC temple, and it was the straw that broke the camels back for me. Mind you, I'm not a weiner by any means - I'm a good ol' college degree holding country boy who has worked in and around the mines for years, (I knew four of the guys killed in the Up

This has been posted before, but I think it is important that we are reminded how far (low) the church will go. This is the web site for the Porto Alegre temple in Brazil. Pay particular attention to the third pargraph of the "Temple History" section, where it tells about the members selling gold from their teeth to finance the temple. http://www.ldschurchtemples.com/portoalegr

Just as a follow up - I do agree that addicts often have trouble distinguishing between use and abuse. In my 15 years of opiate addiction, I never ONCE believed I was an addict - until I had to do my unplanned cold turkey withdrawal. After all, I had legal perscriptions(!!!) (well, for the most part, anyway), though granted, they were from different doctors for all sorts of questionable malady

I am an Ex Mo and a Recovering Drug Addict. My experience - I had a serious accident back in 1995 (was ran over by a truck at work), and, during the resulting major surgeries, discovered the "joy" of IV morphine. As I recovered, I began to take various opiate based meds for the pain - and found that they eased more than physical pain. I was still LDS at the time, though struggli

This guy was given a calling for which there is no training or real guide as to how to act in these situations. Having been in these situations, I know I've tried to offer comfort to the immediate family as best as I could. Whether it was right or not - depends on the perception of the listener. You have to say what is in your heart, do the best you can, and hope it is of comfort. I also re

Gave my donation, and it was a pleasure. Don't ever be afraid to ask. This site has been invaluable to me and who knows how many others. Make it a yearly fund drive. We won't let this site die!!! Thanks for all you have done for us.

When I got my endowments and was sealed at the Washington DC temple in 2000, I was left with two terrible memories - one, of course, was the endowment session itself. A terrible experience for me. The second - how incredibly humorless, grouchy, and bitchy the temple workers were. (Especially the old female ones). One in particular was the haughty lady who ran the clothing/garment shop. She

When I was there in the early '70s, it was more like poster noone said. It was much more laid back than Provo and the real BYU (the students of which looked down on us like we were third world immigrants). I had sideburns below my ear lobes, hair touching my collar, and wore tattered cut off blue jeans all the time. Got pictures to prove it, too. (Rememeber, if the temperature was above 20, it

One of the instances involved a couple who were good friends of mine, and were going through some difficult times. They were praying together and were asked to move along... I thought it was an incredibly cold thing to do to them... From what I saw and heard about, Columbus was (is?) really bad about moving you through fast. Washington DC ranks up there, too...

...two different times, back in the 70's when I was in my dating prime. I wanted to see if they could feel the spirit of eternal families, celestial marraige, and all the other warm and fuzzies associated with the true church. They both ended in disaster.... The first girl, I took to a fast and testimony meeting. (Can you imagine your first exposure to the church in one of those, especia

Back in the days before they would take you to jail for parking against the perimeter fence beside the runways, I'd spend hours watching planes take off and land. Thanks!

I got involved with a divorced lady in my ward. We started going out, and, before too long, wound up happily in the rack a couple of times or so. I was suddenly overcome with good ol' inbred LDS guilt, and went to the bishop to fess up. He told me I had to name the other party, which I refused. I felt that if she needed to repent, then she would talk to him about it, not me. (Plus, it wou

In the early 70's, those of us involved in the basketball program got some cash at the end of the season. It ranged from I think $150 to $200 for the starters, to $50 for the has beens and never weres (like me). I would imagine it was true for the other sports programs as well. I've chuckled about it for years. Oh, and I also got one of those cool varsity jackets with a blue wool body an

As a 4th generation eastern mormon, I was thouroughly indoctrinated from birth - but I always had, even as a kid, something that told me something wasn't right. When I went to the Washington DC temple for my endowments and to be sealed to my wife, it was absolutely one of the worst experiences of my life - the mean (There is no other word) old temple workers, the weird clothes, and the masonic

There was this guy, a nephew or something of one of the prophets, who left the church. He spent years trying to destroy the truth thru the internet, and particuarly on a board called RFM. He sank deeper and deeper into apostacy, acting like he was loving every minute of it (though he was really torn by pangs of guilt, although he claimed he didn't know it.) One day, as he was preparing an

We are subject to winter storms and power outages that can last up to a week here, not to mention the occasional big flood, where bridges and such are washed out and roads are impassable. We keep at least weeks supply of non perishable food, lamp oil, firewood, and water purification supplies at all times, and it usually comes in handy at least once a year. We also keep plenty of ammunition

I don't know, big red... That could almost be the good old second ward here in the appalachians. Maybe the events were not in the same order as anonny, but over the years, I saw most of that kind of behavior here (except we didn't have the law school - we had western know it alls doing their med school residency here). Same thing, I guess... ...though we did have a lady attempt to c

We were taught that you were supposed to repent during the sacrament prayers, and, when you took the sacrament, like some of the others have said, it cleansed you and made you sinless, at least for that moment.

There was a lady in our ward who married her dying RM boyfriend while she was at BYU. (I think he was so bad he died just a day or two after the sealing). Anyway, this gal (she was hot as all get out, too) married a guy who was attending med school - which is why they were way out here in the boondocks - and had three kids with him. I remember someone asked him once about being married to

Actually, that's an interesting question. Do I regret leaving the three hour chloroform sessions, priesthood leadership gossip "who done what" meetings? Obnoxious and overbearing pillars of mormon perfection in the flesh? Temple ceremonies so wierd that I had a panic attack during my endowment session at the DC temple? (I'm a guy who has my own buisiness in the coal industry and s
