Good for you! My husband and I did the same thing 9 years ago. We are in DFW and love it. It's rare for anyone to ask anything about church/religion. People are friendly and we have friends of different religions, no religions, different races, cultures, etc. Most of the people we know aren't even from Texas, and I suspect that a lot of big metro areas are like that. I can't imagine raising my

I've been happily married to an ex-Mormon for almost 18 years. The difference between our situation and yours though, is that he was firmly out before I came along. His mom might have hoped that he'd fall in love with a Mormon girl and come back, but too bad for her. The other difference is that it would never have been an option for my MIL to treat me poorly. My DH wouldn't stand for it. Befo

We just returned from a Utah trip. It was our first since we left 9 years ago, and our last until we have to go for a funeral or something. We stayed at a hotel in Utah county. It was easy to tell the difference between the mormon and non-mormon families. The non-mormon parents (who could be easily identified by their cups of coffee, tank tops, long beards, etc) assisted their children with b

It's seems creepy to me, but I'm glad they've arranged everything. Maybe the fact that the marker is already there will keep this from happening... When my Grandma was buried, we had her funeral and everyone left town. I lived there at the time, so after the stone was placed, my mom asked me to go and check to make sure it was all right. I went to where the grave was supposed to be (next to Gr

My family and I visited Utah last week. It was our first time back in 9 years. While we were there, my inlaws took us to the cemetery to show us their headstone. It's actually in the cemetery with their names and kid's names, etc. No one is buried yet, they're both in their early 70s. Their birthdates are there and obviously they'll have to add the date of death later. I've heard of pre-plann

We lived in Utah when they opened the first Starbucks in Utah County (American Fork). We used to go every Sunday for coffee. It was the best part of my week. :)

Sorry to hear about those annoyances. We're planning a trip back to Utah in August. Our first trip back since we left 9 years ago. I was feeling really annoyed about the expense of staying in a hotel all week, but I really don't want to stay with MIL. Now I think I won't feel quite so bad. Luckily my DH is an only child so our TBM family is limited to MIL, her creepy new husband and some cous

I'm so sorry for your loss. We lost our 4 year old Great Dane to lymphoma almost a year ago. It was devastating. :( I still miss him every day, but time does take away the sting a bit. We added an Australian Shepherd puppy to our family a few months after his death. I hoped a new dog would ease the pain a little and it definitely did. The silliness of a puppy brought laughter back to our house. I

My husband and I are planning to take the kids to Utah this summer. They want to see Grandma's house and Utah. We left 9 years ago and haven't been back, so we figured one visit might not kill us. I was checking on hotels and the different packages they offered, looking for some kind of deal. The Hampton offers a "romance package" which includes sparkling cider. :) Is my in-room coff

I'm sure it depends on the dates. The weeks we're looking at Kayak has DFW to SLC is $395 for the cheapest flight, to New York is $215, to Portland, OR is $299 and to Orlando is $177. Southwest is more expensive than the $395 for our dates. I'll keep checking. Yesterday they were higher, so maybe there's hope.

The train would be fun, but it looks like it would take longer than driving. We would have to detour through Chicago. But I'm keeping that in mind for a trip with a better route. That would be more fun than driving I bet.

I looked at it more last night and we can fly to Orlando, Portland or New York for much cheaper than SLC. All places I would much rather go! I think we'll probably fly into Las Vegas or Denver and just drive from there. That will save us at least $1000 and two nights in Utah. Between flights for 5, a rental car and hotel for a week and a half (there's no way we can handle actually staying with

We are finally going to take a trip back to Utah this summer. We've been gone for 9 years. MIL has flown to see us once or twice a year every year and we feel like it's probably our turn. Also, the kids are dying to see the pretty things in Utah. We have considered driving, but it's about 20 hours plus stops. That doesn't sound like a lot of fun and would also take a big chunk of vacation tim

My husband was ex-communicated. He was raised Mormon, but during his teen years he decided that he didn't believe. He was a little bit wild during this time. He apparently went to an interview with his bishop (next door neighbor) when he was 16. When he was asked all the "worthiness" questions he was honest. He told them that he didn't believe anyway. He stopped going to church. Nothing

I don't have advice for where you should move (because it's hot where we are), but I highly, highly suggest you do it! We left Utah 8 years ago and moved to Dallas. We had no friends here, my husband had no job, but we just wanted out! I'm so, so glad we made the decision to leave. We bought a cheap house and hoped for the best. We knew there were jobs here and we had saved a little money. We

I was married for 5 years before we wanted kids. I was 29 when my daughter was born. Most of my Utah friends had kids much earlier. Some of them have grandkids now (I'm 40!) and I have a Kindergartener. I currently live in Texas and most of my friends started having kids around 30. I know that it varies a lot, but it's definitely not like the crazy rush in Utah. My husband and I had been marri

We were at the Dallas Arboretum on Monday and noticed a large group (maybe 15-20 people) of moron missionaries with a few older people. They were being fairly loud and breaking the "do not climb on the rocks" rules. Generally just annoying, but I always feel that way when I see them. Luckily we were going in opposite directions and only crossed paths once. I didn't realize they went

I grew up in Happy Valley and went to a small Christian church. People who were in need often came to us for help from our Deacon's fund. The local Mormon bishop referred them. They were both Mormon and not.

I grew up in Happy Valley in the 80s. Growing up there as a non-Mormon was awful. I married an ex-Mormon (excommunicated, actually). I found this forum when we were temporarily back in Utah for a couple years. It was so helpful to be able to commiserate a little. I don't post often, but it's nice to have a place where people actually understand Mormonism and the Mormon culture. Most people ju

The Costco near us does wine samples most weekends. Does Costco sell wine in Utah? I wonder how well wine samples would go over. ;)

I grew up in Utah as a babysitter who made that kind of money. People started hiring me when I was probably 10. To care for their children!!! Luckily I never encountered a serious emergency or took out my frustration on a screaming baby. As an adult, I have been very, very cautious about who I've left my kids with. When my youngest was a baby, I never paid less than $15 an hour and I always hi

Wow, I don't know why there is any question that they are Christian. As they'll quote, every single time, "Of course we're Christian!!! JESUS CHRIST is right in the name of our church!!!" Kind of like when a towing company is named #1 Best Towing. Obviously, they must be the best. It can't just be some not-so-clever marketing tactic.

Eight years ago we were living in Utah. Our oldest child was 2 and we were being completely shunned by the neighbors. They all planned a trunk or treat at the end of our street, in the field two houses down from us. No one told us or invited us. We had purchased several bags of candy because the previous year we had run out. We didn't get one trick or treater. Not one porch light was on in the ne

I was raised in Utah as a non-Mormon and I married an ex-Mormon (whose whole family is still TBM). I feel like I know a lot about Mormonism and the culture. I would never attempt to tell someone how to leave TSCC. I know enough to know that it's a very complicated and emotional issue. Also not my business.

I'm so sorry. What a crazy situation! Mormon or not, that family situation seems crazy to me. By stepping back from that kind of controlling situation, you are doing a good thing for your family. My family is back east and DH's family is in Utah. My MIL calls the kids once a week on Skype. They talk about what they did over the past week. The kids don't love it, they get bored, but they do

I'm glad to hear that peculiargifts. My vets tolerate my "every 3 years" plan, but the office still sends out reminders and the vet techs still give me a really hard time. Luckily I feel like I know more than them, since they're like 12 years old, so I just nod and smile (kind of like when my TBM mom talks).

I know a lot of anti-vaxxers and I've wondered this myself. I usually stay away from them so I don't get measles, so I've never asked them. However, as someone who does vaccinate my children I will say that yearly vaccinations of dogs and cats is unnecessary. If people were told to come in yearly to get the same shots over and over, they would probably investigate it a little more. Study after
