I participate in several community college orchestras and symphonic bands assisting students and playing as well. This is the Bible Belt and I cringe when I see students wearing creationism t-shirts and jackets from their visits to the Ark in Kentucky. These are college kids mostly in STEM programs. I also overhear them talking about going to Liberty University or Bob Jones. I want to interfe

We left the corporation 30 years ago. Cleveland had a small ward with only a few priesthood 'holders' where morning meetings might have only 3 or 4 in attendance. Now it is a stake center. The c

Also from the Tribune: https://www.sltrib.com/religion/2024/05/29/mormon-land-surprising-news-about/ East Africa, meanwhile, is booming, the U.S. is rebounding, and many growth measures have met or surpassed pre-pandemic levels. Still, there are causes for concern: West Africa, unlike the continent’s eastern and central regions, has seen its Latter-day Saint growth slow. While the U.S. enjo

If the book of Ether is looked as a standalone piece of religious literature, it has to be the most absurd religious book ever written outside of Scientology. I wonder how AI would analyze it? Being sick and putzing around I found this on Xenu from Wikipedia Xenu, also called Xemu, is a figure in the Church of Scientology's secret "Advanced Technology", a sacred and esoteric te

Perhaps less running around :-). I had to cancel two gigs this weekend due to covid. One of the gigs said they would reschedule. While waiting at the Dr’s office I got an email for 3 more gigs. I am busy with music. It is something I love to do. I have 9 performances coming up of the musical Wizard of Oz where I play in the orchestra bit the bass clarinet, alto sax and clarinet. It is a

I was at the pharmacy 3 weeks ago to get my Shingrix shot since I am an old fart. The pharmacist recommended a covid booster as well since my last one was 6 months ago. I still got covid. Tested positive today after coughing and feeling sick yesterday and today so I went to my doctor. Never anticipated covid. Figured it was bronchitis. Slight fever 99.5. It is still around even thoug

This was over 30 years ago. All endowed members were told to stay after sacrament meeting for a message from the stake president who was to speak to us. He blasted members for tucking in their garments so they could wear shorts or sleeveless shirts or blouses. Apparently a woman went to her temple recommend interview wearing shorts and that set him off. This may be stolen from someone, bu

Unfortunately this school has been in the news locally. It has been and continues using teachers who lack teaching credentials. It has been cited a few times already claiming they will fix things, but they never do. It should be shut down in my opinion. The students are not getting a quality education.

Steve Benson has unfortunately had a stroke. His wife occasionally updates us, but his prognosis has not been good. Steve helped many as you have. Here is an update. https://www.exmormon.org/phorum/read.php?2,2532325,2532325#msg-2532325

How nice of you to stop by. I am still alive (73) never imagining this site would last so long and so many, like yourself, come back after 20 or more years to visit. I will read your chat later.

We are fine. We were prepared for a storm. It literally went north and south. Our server has gone down in the past with these types of storms.

This is a crazy time here in East TN. Hopefully we will not go down, but it is a possibility. We are watching the weather on the Weather Channel in addition to a local TV station in Chattanooga. We are about to be hit with high winds. We may need to light a candle to Odin for our safety. We have our important stuff in a downstairs bath and ready to move into it if things get worse. No basem

I am around Seventh Day Adventists a great deal as they are the 3rd most prominent religion surrounding me. The first two are Baptists of all varieties and the Church of God (Pentecostal). In fact, I am playing a solo show at a SDA owned assisted living facility tomorrow night. The SDAs seem to hold a large percentage of nursing facilities around the country, especially here. I drive through

I have a music room upstairs in our home. I was about to practice when suddenly the floor sank down then up. It seems the vinyl plank flooring actually rose up for just a moment. I live 50 miles from the epicenter in TN. It is big news here as earthquakes are rather rare. And yes, it must be due to sin.

Interesting. I was thinking of him this morning as well. The ex-Mormon community was mentioned in his obituary. It was important to him and he was important to us. I miss his well thought out and well written commentaries.

Yes Elder Berry.. I am 73 and started this almost 30 years ago. A one year venture that now spans decades. I am feeling old Somewhat related - I am paraphrasing something I read on Scientology and how it maintains its authority over its adherents. L Ron Hubbard, shortly before founding Scientology said, 'The only way you can control people is to lie to them'. The Mormon leaders essential

I take a D3 and B complex daily. Those are the only supplements I use. I usually buy at Walgreens. The main thing I check on the label is to see if the product is from Utah. I do not trust any supplements from there. To my understanding the majority of Utah based MLM products are fraudulent. In my mind it taints everything health related from that state. This guy is just one of countless

This post (and many others) need to be widely read. I hope after nearly 12 years to start updating the site with a new look. This bb will remain though it is not cell phone friendly. This would fit nicely under Mormon news. This program will be a disaster. I think of folks who were active members and they are among the most unlikely people I would want to share anything with. PRRI’s 2024 Post-Election Survey asked to what extent Americans agree with the following statement “The immigrants entering the country illegally today are poisoning the blood of our country.” Nearly four in ten Americans say they either completely agree (15%) or mostly agree (23%) with the statement, compared with the majority who completely disagree (35%) or mostly disagree (25%). A parallel path here in Tennessee is to have school vouchers. Parents will receive $7000 per student they send to private schools. First-year cost is $450 million and is expected to grow annually. Tennessee is already ranked 3rd or 4th for the worst public education in the US. This will further decimate the local school budgets and discourage teachers. The phrase 'Thank God for Mississippi',

Sigh. I was incredibly stupid and trusting. I bought that book as a birthday present for myself when we were newly married. It troubled me though as it was difficult to follow the Nibley's logic to support the Book of Abraham. His sentences were convoluted and so pedantic to be incomprehensible to me. One Saturday I went to the University of Wisconsin library in Milwaukee to look up the refe

A book I recommend is 'A History of Private Life' - Revelations of the Medieval World. In the 1100s the local lords and landowners found that creating churches was a good way to control their people. I am taking a class at a local university currently concentrating on this period of time. Prior to the 1100s, it was the lord(s) who went to pray to god to protect his people. This is an oversimp

Messy, that was funny what your mom accomplished - passive aggressiveness expertly done. Years ago, before the Net, DW was primary president in our small ward. She was about to get snacks and treats for a primary party. The bishop told her she is required to go the the stores and write done the prices of the items (napkins, candy, paper plates etc.) and then meet him in his office for him to

What Is a Cryptid? According to Merriam-Webster, cryptids are animals or creatures that are claimed to exist but have never been scientifically verified. This means the term '"cryptid" can officially include anything from the Loch Ness Monster to that ghost that lives in the abandoned house around the corner. From the BBC this morning. The search for Big Foot. https://www.bbc.co

In the mid 70s I believed it to be a true history. In Finland we had to buy our BoMs to give to people with the understanding the folks we gave the books to would pay us for them. That only happened once in 2 years. We could not even give them away. A case of Book of Mormons would last for weeks as Finns were not interested.

I spent 3 weeks in Germany this summer and one of the trips just outside of Munich is the Dachau prison camp. In the 1960s Germany razed most of the camp structures, then later realized some of it should be saved as a reminder of its history and to teach future generations of what occurred and what can occur. It was a somber visit. Saving Jonestown seems similar to me. Keep it as a memorial a

I do not know the location of the proposed Knoxville TN temple. The Smoky Mtn National Park is the most visited park in the US. Most likely it will be visible to visitors going to the Park, Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge (Dollywood) for the publicity.
