This popped into my head yesterday and I ran it by some exmos on Facebook. Some of them thought the idea was quite interesting. One of them said he was going to put it on another popular forum. Certainly a lot of missionaries come home from their missions and gush about how wonderful their experience was, but there are many, and I’m guessing a fair number here, who feel they were subjected to

Marcion of Sinope (2nd century) and the gnostics afterward believed that Jehovah was NOT the Son of God. I also have come to believe that. The concept is that Jehovah was a counterfeit, a cruel demiurge who enslaved the people for his own purposes. To me, the Jehovah of the Old Testament of the OT does not seem like the same being as Christ. Jehovah mandated death for breaking the Sabbath

:) Well, only the King James Version of the Bible is approved by the church, and the KJV does not translate giants as Nephilim, so I doubt that they know!

In Genesis, before the flood, there are verses which talk about giants. They are called the offspring of “the sons of God (fallen angels) and daughters of women.” In some translations of the Bible (not the KJV), these giants are called Nephilim. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nephilim Nephilim is an obscure word, probably of Hebrew derivation and has most commonly been translated as: “apos

The truth is available to anyone. And you don't have to get it from anyone else. I have come to believe this is a personal spiritual journey. It's about you, and it's not about what you are willing to sacrifice, it's what you are willing to receive. And since it's a personal spiritual journey, you can't get it wrong. And no one can tell it is right or wrong because it is not their journey.

An open letter to Mormons going into apoplectic shock over the ruling about same sex marriage in Utah. First of all, Karma’s a bitch, ain’t it? Okay, you’re spewing pious indignation, and a little spittle too. Now, before you make yourself look any more stupid, consider your remarks in the context of what Christian doctrine actually is. Oh, before I go on, you’re still claiming you’r

Portland is a great place to live. Oregon is a very nonreligious state and Multnomah county is the least churchy county in the state. Our unofficial motto is "Keep Portland Weird." Although I think it ended this summer, for years there was an annual performance of Star Trek in the Park (near one of the bridges), there's the annual nude bike ride, we have more movie theaters and booksto

I will never forget that day. At the time my parents were really into Lawrence Welk and thought it would be really swell for me to take accordion lessons. We had a recital scheduled for that night and every year at the recital, the instructor had a student play the Star Spangled Banner. I just happened to be on the instruction book the song was in and so he asked me if I wanted to be the one to p

Whenever you have a church such as the Catholics or the Mormons, its all about power, control and fear. (Gregory VII): DICTATUS PAPAE, a list of 27 title headings entered into the papal register in March 1075. The most important of the articles were those that claimed: a. the supremacy of the Roman pontiff over the entire Church, including the eastern branch ('That the Roman pontiff alone ca

Bednar, if you want me to pay tithing, show me in the four gospels where the Savior said it was important. You can't do that, because it's not there. As Willy Wonka said: "You lose. You get nothing. Good day sir."

I was able to tie my own family history into European royalty in a couple places. When you do that, it sends you all over Europe, through all the royalty and nobility. Much of this information is known. With a fair amount of accuracy you can trace the royalty of England back to about 750 AD. Spain will go back about as far. Many of the other European countries will get you back to Charlemagne.

I'd been kicking this idea around for awhile, even posted some thoughts on here on the subject. Finally put it all down in a way that seemed to make sense to me and decided I thought it was something important enough to put in front of their noses. I signed my name at the bottom and then under that "Former Bishop, Arleta and Mt. Tabor Wards, Portland, OR." Now, lets see what happens. :

Barnupcrik, I believe God and his son love us unconditionally. Here is a good place to start: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcionism. Marcion of Sinope, in the 2nd century developed these ideas and was excommunicated for them. If God is vengeful and wrathful then people obey out of fear. They are easy to control. But the Savior taught: Love God, Love your neighbor. That just about covers

I have a full copy of his journal (4th great grandfather), apparently also the great grandfather of Hugh Nibley...didn't know that before tonight. I went looking for the full version online and can't find it. The versions available seem to be rather severely edited, probably because of the quotes I am going to share below. April 6, 1852: “President Young spoke on the subject of tithing them

However you want to pronounce it, the God of the Old Testament was a real SOB. I do not believe he is the same being as either God or the Savior. There is an interesting article in Wikipedia on the topic of Marcionism (2nd century offshoot of Christianity) that discusses this.

Wish I would have seen this before I posted mine about DNA. Facts evidently don't matter. Brigham Young told my Jewish ancestor all his Jewish blood had been changed!

After reading all the information over the past few years about the DNA problems trying to tie the Lamanites to the tribes of Israel, I recalled something from my 4th gg grandfather's journal. As I've posted on here before, he was the first Jew to join the church. Just found this in his journal tonight! October 29, 1854: Brigham Young preached concerning the Jews; "No Jew coming in this c

Well, as an example: If someone attacks Brigham Young's Adam God theory, apologists AND the church say it is not official doctrine. And then if in reply it is argued that he taught this doctrine at conference, then the shrill response is "it was still never sustained by the 12 and the general membership in conference, so it is not official revelation." The declaration to give the p

Comments made by prophets or General Authorities cannot be used as evidence against the church because they are not considered official revelation unless uttered by the prophet, sustained unanimously by the 12 and also by the church as a whole. The church has established the precedent for canonizing new revelation and saving ordinances by including them its Latter Day scriptures. The scripture

"Once again our critics ask us about the Book of Abraham and so once again we will answer their questions. The question is: Are we certain that one of the figures on the facsimile is in fact a slave? First of all, it is well known that in the midst of the Civil War Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation with the purpose of freeing all the slaves. In spite of what the enemies of
