don't go for anything dark or heavy at first. Beer is an acquired taste, but I'm tellin' ya, it's really good once you acquire it. Cheers

http://exmormon.org/phorum/read.php?2,82334,82334#msg-82334 Buddha taught as one of the four eternal truths that “life is suffering”. But it is through that suffering that we grow and develop. We escape the traditions and dogma of our parents and their parents by virtue of that growth. It is through this process that we create our own unique spirituality. The real answers to life do not

Upon his return he gave the report, good mountain grazing, nice pastures and a creek running through the bottom land. "How wide is the crick?" one of brethren asked. "Not too wide" J Golden replied, "I can pee half way cross it". With that President Grant said, "you're out of order Elder Kimball". To which J Golden replied, "your damn right about t

Fawn Brodie's book is easily obtainable on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/No-Man-Knows-My-History/dp/0679730540 In each chapter Professor Brodie lays out and references the facts as they were known in 1945. The years have not been kind to Mormon truth claims so if anything the evidence has become much stronger since Brodie completed her work. At the end of each chapter she summarizes and t

If you think you are going to have a meaningful conversation with even the most damning evidence you are wasting your time. Mormon leadership is fairly well inculcated in the dogma, anything you might show them would drive them immediately to denial and rejection of your hypothesis. The source doesn't matter and it doesn't matter how convincing you think your argument might be. It's a waste of

I just always knew about it and assumed everyone did. I don't even remember how I first learned about it. Then again I grew up in a pretty fundamental McConkiesque home. My Father was into that garbage hook line and sinker. In fact looking back, my father had no other interest except Mormon Dogma, which probably explains why the rest of his life, which peaked at being a bishop, was mostly a

but what do you mean it's a real thing? You believe that as long as the recipient doesn't sin against the holy ghost that is commit murder that he is bound up to obtain celestial glory after a period of time of agony and torture in hell to pay for his own sins? That's the doctrine. I call that mumbo jumbo I think. But then looking back, it's really no more bizarre than anything else in Mormo

It's a pretty poorly kept secret. I think most Salt Lake "Temple Worthy" Mormons have stood gazing at the door to the "Holy of Holies" in the Salt Lake Celestial room and heard the stories of the personal invitation that comes from the prophet himself. It's amazing what we can convince ourselves of when we are properly prepared and eased into it. You have to hand it to Mo

I know Jeff Holland personally and quite well, that just doesn't sound like him at all. My interaction with him is mostly in person, but I can't imagine that kind of derision coming out of his mouth. Maybe his writing is more acerbic that his speaking. He must have been having a really bad day. Tom, do you mind if I discuss this with him sometime? I won't if it would make you uncomfortable, b

It's conceivable that TSCC could eventually spin the BoM into some of of allegorical narrative, and that would solve about 20% of the historical issues the church faces. However, when you found a cult based on a personality there's is just no way around explaining away that the founder is a con man and child rapist.

Next in line and pres of the 12. No one dares defy him. That piece of garbage speech will be swept under the rug about 5 minutes after his dark heart pumps out it's last milliliter of venom.

TSCC is absolutely remiss in their failure to control this conversation and the result is that countless people of been severely traumatized an subjected to self recrimination and agony. To paraphrase a line from one of my favorite classics, "what I'm going to do on BKP's grave won't pass for flowers".

Comments are back, Discuss can be a little flukey that way. You are right that the article would have never appeared had it not been for the NYT. Peggy Stack is a hack, the last time she investigated anything DISCO was all the rage. She's Carol Makita with less connections.

Mission Presidents are "trained" at the MTC the end of every June and then sent to the field on July 1st (more or less) This training consist of daily large meetings where each an every apostles eventually shows up to speak over the course of a week, culminating with the Prophet making an appearance and big send off on the last day. One of the more common topics here on RfM seems to be masturbation. I have a tendency to write long post, but this time I'll get right to the point. 1. Masturbation is NOT on the temple recommend questions 2. Masturbation is NOT required to be asked about for temple recommend, for missionary recommendation or any other ecclesiastical interview within the Mormon Church. Church leaders that do

When someone goes out of his way to say something homophobic like that I feel sorry for him. Imagine all the loathing and self hate he has to endure to cover his secret. Besides, I bet what he was really thinking was how badly he wanted to put his hand on your leg. :)

Since I resigned from the Church one of life's simple pleasures I've enjoyed is an occasional glass of wine or a beer with friends. I never really drink the whole bottle so often I open a bottle, have a couple of glasses and then end up wasting the rest. A friend told me I should try boxed wine because it keeps for a month. So not knowing anything about it I went out and bought this box of Fr

I often wonder how many of those empty suits sitting there in the pews on Sunday are men living lives of quiet desperation yearning for freedom and seeing no path that includes their family.

It would be rather bizarre to identify yourself in an anonymous poll as LDS and then say, "but it's a pile of horse manure". Makes you wonder about the 20% in that category. Anecdotaly, I personally know 3 MD's and a couple of very successful lawyers (so those with graduate degrees) who don't believe for an instant that Joseph Smith was any sort of a prophet, but they a frightened t
