In my Saturday newspaper, there is a page dedicated to religious events. Tonight there was one that was interesting: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (with the address) invites you to celebrate the Atonement and Resurrection on Palm Sunday, April 14. I am aware that Easter is not big in the Mormon church, but if the church is interested in becoming more Christian mainstream, why

He who laughs at his own one-liners laughs the loudest. Bill Maher recently proved himself very badly at any empathy towards transgender people with the recent bathroom laws. Again, Bill Maher's favorite fan is Bill Maher himself.

By the way, I can't stand him. He's a charlatan with the best of them. I am curious though that so many religious movements were begun during the burnt-out period during the 19th century in New York: Seventh Day Adventism, Christian Science, Jehovah's Witness, LDS and several other movements which would take pages and pages to enumerate. Which of them have the monopoly of truth?

I have a "friend" from high school. He was practically a missionary back then extolling his wonderful faith. We both had a Public Speaking class and several times his presentations included snippets from Mormonism. Immediately upon graduation he moved to Utah from our Midwestern town. He did his stint as a missionary, married, and has a whole nest-full of kids. Fifty years later we h

I was reading a blog today. It was political and so I can't repeat it here but it was about Tom Cruise and a new movie. There were several comments on his obsession with Scientology. One respondent mentioned that at least Mormons are "one notch down" from Scientology. I would think that this would be a comparison that doesn't say much about Mormonism as a positive force—one notch d

There have been a few threads on what people enjoy at Christmas. One of mine has been watching "Amahl and the Night Visitors" when it is on television. It is truly a Gian Carlo Menotti classic. I haven't seen it for a few years now. I will really have to look to see when it is on this year. No matter what one's belief system is, I can't help but think that with the beautiful melod

I've heard so much about this HBO series and the first season was on sale. So, I bought the DVDs. I don't know if I will continue with the rest of the seasons or not. I don't seem to make heads or tails out of it. Truth be told, I've never read the Book of Mormon as a never-mo, but having read so many postings here over the years, I know that there are some pretty violent scenarios in the most

What is this? What is its purpose? If this is not for public consumption but has far-ranging consequences, how is the average Joe and Joan Mormon supposed to know what's up? Suppose that this latest dictum by the 15 on SSMs and children didn't get out; then when the push came to a shove on the 'not-8 but the 18-year old' rule and the disparagement of the parents who raised these children as

I live in a good-size Midwest town. This isn't the Moridor, but we do have two good sized Mormon churches here. At one of the Mormon churches, there is a Catholic church just across the street. This morning I happened to drive by on my way to somewhere. There was a mini bumper-to-bumper traffic with Mass just over at the Catholic church. This church has four Masses on a Sunday morning (plus

I watched an hour or so or the General Conference this afternoon on the television, but at the same time I had porn going on my computer monitor. You can imagine which grabbed my attention more. Anyway, I've never seen a children's choir at GC, granted that I've not watched many of them. Isn't it awful that these poor children have to sit there listening (or maybe not listening) to a bunch of

I am a no-mo, but I'm friends with a Mormon on Facebook as we went to high school together and next year will be our 50th anniversary since graduation. It's a busy time on our 1966 Facebook page. He is very TBM and moved to Utah after he finished his missionary stint. Another high school friend who I don't remember is also a Mormon and lives in Utah (Do lots of Non-Utahan Mormons move there?).

This "Adam and Steve" thing is one of the most tiresome clichés. Even more irritating is that people say this like they came up with the phrase themselves—kind of almost like patting themselves on the back for such a witty rejoinder.

...a Mormon? NBC/MSNBC recently contracted a news reporter for the West Coast but based in Los Angeles and that is a busy news center and he has a lot of exposure. His name is Jacob Rascon and is very photogenic and very articulate. He is going to be a good reporter. He is a graduate of BYU in journalism but is of a Latino background out of Texas. If a Mormon, I am disappointed as I j

Enjoyed your story very much, Shummy. It reminded me of my farewell with my Dad but different still. My father was diagnosed with colon cancer which had metastasized everywhere in his body soon after a happy celebration of my parents' 50th wedding anniversary. I lived 1,100 miles away and my sister even further yet on the opposite coast, but we managed four trips timed just right over the c

There are four rather large high schools in my town in the Midwest, one of which is Catholic. Every year near graduation time the newspaper publishes the names and parents' names of the top students (about 25 from each school), their accomplishments and where they plan to go to school in the Fall. They are kind of fun to read. Among them were two Mormon students, one each from a different high

The "big" woman who was running the Jesus Camp — her arrogant demeanor was palpable. Bona Dea is right — most Christians would shudder at what was going on at the Jesus Camp. I am pretty sure that the kid who was enthralled at meeting Ted Haggard didn't know that he was bedding young men plying them with drugs. A man of God.

Being Memorial Day Weekend, my mother went to the cemetery to plant flowers at my father's grave. As expected, there were several others doing the same. My mother heard a loud exclamation behind her: "No, thank you. I am a Methodist!" Then two ladies walked up to my kneeling mother whose hands were covered with dirt. They identified themselves as Jehovah's Witnesses and they wante

As a no-mo, this tithing settlement almost sounds like April 15 is around the corner. This is so strange to me especially when the Mormon church provides so little outlay to local congregations. Local congregations do plan a budget around what the members pledge, but if it isn't met, then some cuts are made. It is never held over a person's head as a condition for membership. While most Chr

With Susan's faithful service at RfM ended, I am curious: What does a moderator do exactly? If it is what I think it is, it sounds like a 24/7 job. You couldn't pay me to do this kind of work and she did it selflessly! 1. Keeps out trolls? 2. Makes sure that RfM rules are kept? Politics, bullying, name-calling, etc. 3. Reads all those long posts by Steve Benson? Yawns the way through esoteri

If you want to be in Alexandria, try the West End. Lots of condos there and maybe even within walking distance of the Van Dorn Metro Station. It still would be expensive but probably a hell of a lot cheaper than Old Town.

Are there shorter phrases for "And it came to pass..." in other languages that would save space and paper in their Book of Mormon? In Portuguese it's "Naqueles dias..." ("In those days...").

My roommate in college said the word fi/uck in every other word. It got so tiresome that it lost it's provacativeness. I rarely say it but when I do, it is for its forcefulness in a point I am trying to make. Funny how a word like that means what we like to do, but rarely say it in its context.

One wonders how a Mormon can remain a Mormon with all its history, much of it with big gaps as evidenced by the recent essays on polygamy, etc.; the intrusive nature of interviews with the bishop; tithing checking at the end of the year, etc. I think a good analogy would be covering your ass on the way out the door. Is it culture or belief that keeps Mormons within the system? I might under
