I avoided Vietnam after my mission by enlisting for 3 years and picking an MOS that would get me to Germany. I recently read a fantastic book about a Returned Missionary who ended up in combat on Hamburger Hill. Google SGT ROCK to find it. I have read it three times already...it is that good...really.
