It's all about who can be the very, very, VERY most righteous! Sort of a very sick sort of ego trip.

So glad to hear this. Sounds like you handled it very well and your intuition was right on. Difficult and painful times, but it looks like things are getting better. Sending happy thoughts to you.

The first time I went to the temple was as a teen, to do baptisms for the dead. This was in the 60's before the Oakland Temple and we traveled by bus overnight to the LA Temple. All of that was fun. When we finally got to the temple and entered I expected some huge influx of spirit. ----nothing. Except one of the girls gushing, "Oh can't you just feel the spirit here??!!" Me (men

Thank you so much for you post. A glimpse at the mental machinations of a "special" witness is so validating and eye-opening. I wish you and your family peace on the road ahead. I hope you will check in frequently and share your experiences and insights.

The church is NOT focused on the family. That is only a propaganda technique. The church is focused only on the CHURCH! It totally SUCKS! I feel so badly for this good young man. And I hope the MP rots in hell. When my husband was dying, my son was in boot camp in the Army. My husband wrote and suggested to him that he not to come home, to treat it like a mission, blah, blah. My son c

You might try calling the mission office. That's what I had to do to get them to leave my nevermo mother alone after my always inactive father died. You know -- gett'em while they're grieving. Article about it in the LA Times didn't hurt either!

I am so very sorry. That is heartbreaking. Not much comfort, I am sure, that they are also losing out. And they are denying a child, whom they profess to love, irreplaceable experiences.

When I was a YW leader in Provo in the 70's we arranged for the YW and YM to have a day in SLC. Rented the bus, did the Beehive House and Temple Square but the supposed frosting on the cake was that it had been arranged for the group meet Sterling W. Sill (I think that is who it was) in his office. All the kids were quite excited about it. The only think I remember about that encounter was tha

Absolutely! My own personal experience: My doctor likes to "doctor" and is certain that because I am overweight I will have high cholesterol, diabetes, etc. He put me on a statin and I took it and didn't think too much about it. After a short amount of time I began be become increasingly depressed. Often on the edge of crying for no reason. I went on line and took all the depr

The church is an empty shell. Image over substance has always been the rule. I was active in the church in its supposed "golden age" -- 50'S-60's -- and even then it was more about how you looked than how you behaved. One of my favorites -- "If you are at a party where they are serving drinks, always have 7-Up in a bottle so no one will think you are drinking." Went to BYU

Wasn't keeping track, but I would say I stayed active 5-6 years past when I was mentally, emotionally and spiritually DONE. The reason -- I wanted to see my youngest daughter get married and Hubby and I had taught her so well, we knew it would be in the temple. So I played the game until that day. Last time I ever went to the temple. Took me a while after that to send in my resignation. Hubb

I think that most really TBM women ARE misogynists. It is what the church teaches - some by word and mostly definitely by action. That FB bit was pretty hard to read.

When I was a teen (TBM with inactive/partmember) parents, I was already having the normal issues a teen has with parents -- in particular, my father. Hearing this sort of thing at church just gave me ammunition to further disrespect my father. Afterall, he was not being an appropriate PH leader in our household. I place some of the blame on TSCC that I had such a difficult relationship wit

I was terribly offended by the sleeveless dress one of the women was wearing toward the end! I have to confess that I always loved this song back in the day. But I am also happy that they church has dumped that Indian Placement Program, etc.

My bet would be that at least 90% of it is callings and tithing. Lived in Provo for 30+ years and did not see it as a Mecca of charity and generosity.

My bishop didn't want my BIL to marry my sister because her (our) parents were part-member inactive. He didn't think she would be a valiant Mormon and would always put her parents above the church. It also might have had something to do with the fact that BIL had previously broken an engagement to the 1st counselor's daughter!

They haven't called me since I resigned. I have to admit I miss it a bit -- it was fun playing with them. I'd tell them I would trade my sister's address (or whomever they were currently seeking) for their mother's. Usually stopped them cold. Or I'd tell them I didn't give family addresses to strangers. They would try and convince me they weren't a stranger!

When my niece was in HS she wanted a certain part in the Road Show. She has a lot of talent and would most likely have gotten that part except there was a semi-active girl they wanted to lure in so they gave the part to her. The next year my niece went up to the director of the show and said "Will I get a good part this year or should I just go inactive?"
